GNU Cash
GnuCash is a free accounting program designed for small-business and personal use. Although basic accounting knowledge is required, GnuCash comes with a very good help file with a complete walk through teaching you basic accounting principal while showing you how to setup and use GnuCash.
For personal use, GnuCash is perfect. It can keep track of bank account, stocks, income and expenses and perform a number of other more advanced task.
For small-businesses however, GnuCash lacks some critical features: Inventory management and automated employee tax deduction calculation. Inventory management can be done manually if the amount of inventory you go through is minimum. Employee tax deductions can also be enter in manually if you only have a few employees, but if you have more than 4 employees, it's just not worth it. Because of these limitations GnuCash is only useful for service based or Internet based business where your not involved with selling retail and only have 1 or 2 employees. Retail based businesses or business with many employees are better of with another account program like Peachtree or Quickbooks.
