Spyware Terminator
Spyware Terminator is a completely free anti-spyware program that can be used in your home or the office. Clam-AV can be bundled with Spyware Terminator to provides virus protection.
Spyware Terminator's main defense against Malware is through a HIPS protection system. HIPS monitors multiply system settings for any changes and alerts the user when changes accrue. Because most (no all) malware must modify system settings to infect a computer, HIPS can alert the user of a potential malware infection.
Unfortunately HIPS monitoring systems have several disadvantages.
- Negative effect on performance - Because HIPS monitors so many system settings for changes, the effect on system performance is very noticeable.
- Annoying alert messages - HIPS's frequent alert messages quickly become annoying which causes users to automatically click the approved button without knowing what they are approving.
- Low detection rate - HIPS detections are based on characteristics, which give it an advantage on new viruses, however, it is not as effective as definition based detections.
Spyware Terminator has limited on access scan protection, only provides protection from spyware and relies on Claim-AV for Antivirus protection. Not to mention Claim-AV only runs on a full system scan and the detection rates are low.
During the installation of Spyware Terminator, you will be given the option to install web guard tool-bar and set your default search provider to crawler.com. Personally, I didn't like the tool-bar and I have seen it cause Internet performance problems on several computers.
Spyware Terminator may not be the best antivirus program out there, but it does provide basic protection and is completely free.
